Because this is an ongoing investigation no other information can be released at this time about the case.
The Troup County School System issued a release on Monday stating the Callaway High was on a soft lockdown.
“Callaway High School is currently under a soft lockdown as law enforcement investigates an incident in the area,” the system wrote in the release. “Students and staff will remain in their current classrooms, and visitors will not be permitted on campus until the incident is resolved and the soft lockdown has been lifted. No checkouts will be permitted at this time. Everyone is safe at this time. This is a precautionary measure. We will keep you updated.”
The School System did release updates and lifted the lockdown around 1 p.m.
According to police reports, Sherman exited the school by fleeing through an exterior classroom door. Additional officers were dispatched to assist in the search for him and he was located within several minutes in a wooded area away from the school.
Troup County School Superintendent Dr. Rachel Hazel stated it is always the priority of the system to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. She pointed out the arrests were related to a past investigation and not a new threat.
She also stated that school operations are continuing as normal and that the schools continue to provide a safe environment for students.
The LaGrange Police Department also has pointed out its appreciation to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, Troup County Marshal’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol for their assistance during the investigation and arrest.
