Fort Valley Police Chief David Wilson resigns from position after 4 months on the job

FORT VALLEY, Ga. — After serving as the Fort Valley Chief of Police for over four months, David Wilson resigned from his position on Thursday, July 2.

According to the resignation letter submitted to City Administrator LeMario Brown, Chief Wilson will no longer serve in the position as of Saturday, July 18.

The letter from Wilson said he has decided to step away from the role and transition to a part-time position in the department.

“During my time as Chief, I have been privileged to work alongside a dedicated group of officers and staff who have remained committed to making our community a safer place. Together, we have accomplished many positive things, and I am grateful for the relationships and experiences I have gained throughout my tenure,” Wilson wrote. “After careful consideration, I have decided to step down from my role as Chief and transition to a part-time position with the department. This decision was not made lightly, as I truly care about the City of Fort Valley and the citizens we serve. “

Wilson was appointed as the interim chief in February by the Fort Valley Mayor and City Council, after the firing of former FVPD Chief DJ Flores and Assistant Chief Michael Bostic.

In his resignation letter, Wilson wrote “new opportunities have emerged” and that the mayor and city council want to move the police department in a “different direction.”

Wilson noted in the letter that during his tenure as Police Chief, he has worked to enhance public safety, most recently by implementing the Flock Camera System.

“During my tenure, I have worked diligently to enhance public safety, strengthen departmental operations, and introduce new enforcement initiatives. Notably, the implementation of the Flock Camera System has contributed to improving our ability to protect the community and respond to incidents more effectively, said Wilson. “I take pride in knowing that the department is in a stronger position today and that our efforts have helped improve the safety and well-being of our citizens.”

Wilson added that while he is “disappointed” that he will not continue to serve as chief, he believes the transition is a step in the right direction.

“While I am disappointed that my leadership will not continue under this new direction, I respect the decision of the Mayor and City Council,” Wilson said. “Given these circumstances, I believe it is in the best interest of all parties for me to step aside at this time, allowing me to pursue broader career goals and explore the new opportunities that have recently presented themselves.”

The letter from Wilson said he still plans to work part-time for the FVPD, stating that he is dedicated to the citizens of Fort Valley.

“Please be assured that my commitment to the community remains unchanged. I look forward to continuing to serve and protect the citizens of Fort Valley while returning to my part-time capacity and supporting the department in any way I can,” Wilson said.
