I won’t lie - there are things that come up in life that I really don’t want to do. In many cases, they just don’t get done. In other cases, I pay people for doing it. I’ve always believed there are two kinds of people in the world - those who do things, and those who pay others to do things. I have always fallen into the second category.
The first battle after adoption of the Declaration of Independence took place at Island Flats near what is now Elizabethton, Tennessee. It would be Cherokee Indians, allied with the British, attacking settlements in the area and Fort Watauga. The Patriot militia and settlers would prevail. A number of historical markers can be found in the area and with assistance from archaeologists Fort Watauga was reconstructed during America’s Bicentennial celebration. It is now part of the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park.
The Georgia Trust for Local News today purchased The Macon Telegraph and The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer in a landmark transaction that puts two storied papers under local control and nonprofit ownership.
One person is dead and another is in custody and facing a murder charge after a shooting incident in Manchester on Sunday. According to reports from the Manchester Police Department, the incident occurred around 2:32 p.m. Sunday. According to the report, Manchester Police officers responded to the 500 block of Martin Luther King Drive regarding a reports of a person being shot.
FOCUS Strikes Out With Hamilton Council
By a 3-2 vote, the Hamilton City Council voted against FOCUS consolidating its operations during Monday’s meeting. In a very rare occurrence for a Hamilton council meeting, it was a true standing-room only crowd. Most of those attending were in support of FOCUS, or Fellowship of Christians United for Service, with many of those serving with the organization.
The heights of summer! (Or the depths, depending on how you look at it.) Some people decry the heat and humidity, while others seem to revel in it. I’m not too sure about those revelers, though. Personally, when the heat and humidity get too much, I contemplate jumping into a swimming pool. Only at the shallow end, though, since I can’t swim. If I go into the deep part, I sink. Or should there be a “t” in that word somewhere? Anyway, on with the trivia!
If you normally read my column, you might remember a column I wrote in March stating my concerns with HB 1009. The law goes into effect next school year but the question remains what affect will it have on administrators and teachers who are charged to enforce it. Or, at least it leaves a question in my mind.
One of the best summer meteor showers is set to begin next Friday night. The Perseids Meteor Shower begins July 17 typically ending on or about Aug. 24.
