Pine Mountain Council Rescinds Pay Raise

A bit of confusion notwithstanding, Monday evening the Pine Mountain Town Council rescinded a decision made during last month’s meeting that would have drastically increased compensation paid to the mayor and council members.

Easy come, easy go.

A bit of confusion notwithstanding, Monday evening the Pine Mountain Town Council rescinded a decision made during last month’s meeting that would have drastically increased compensation paid to the mayor and council members.

Mayor Mary Ruth Mullins said that during the May meeting, the vote to increase the pay had been done incorrectly. That vote had raised the pay of the mayor from $1,800 per year to $6,000 per year, and increased council members pay from $360 per year to $4,500 per year.

Council member Thomas Scott motioned to rescind the decision made in May with council member Jim Trott offering a second. That motion would have reverted council pay to the amounts prior to May. The motion failed by a 3-2 vote with council members Frances Mabry, Stokely Pound and Curtis Bray opposed.

But that was not the end.

Mabry asked when the issue could be further discussed as she was in favor of a pay raise but not that much. Mullins responded the decision had just been made. Mabry was apparently confused regarding the process and then motioned to rescind the May decision, this coming immediately after she had voted not to rescind it. Scott seconded the motion which passed that time with a 3-2 vote, Pound and Bray being opposed.

Mabry asked when a salary increase could be discussed and Mullins answered during a future work session or meeting.
