Hogansville Council Extends Data Center Moratorium 30 More Days

The Hogansville City Council held their last regularly scheduled meeting for this month on July 20th. Freddie Broome from the Georgia Municipal Association presented an Advanced Leadership Certification through GMA to city employee Ryan Diaz. Diaz is the city’s Gas Supervisor, but according to City Manager Lisa Kelly, he shows up for all city emergencies no matter the time of night. He was one of over 100 city employees from across the state to earn certification through GMA.

     The first bit of new business concerned the data center moratorium which expires on August 2nd. A moratorium extension was discussed, and after Councilman Jason Baswell proposed a thirty day extension from August 2nd, the draft was approved. Next, the council awarded the city’s sanitation services for the near future to their current provider, AmWaste, who was bidding against three other companies. The agreement comes with the stipulation that Hogansville can exit the three-year plan if it so chooses. AmWaste will also offer glass, cardboard and plastic recycling service for Hogansville customers.

     Councilwoman Kandis Strickland, whose term is up on her Downtown Development Authority seat, has applied to continue for another term. The council approved her application and will vote on her appointment at the next council meeting. Lastly, Lisby O’Kelly, who recently opened The Antique Vault downtown, has applied to be on the Downtown Development authority. Her application will also be voted on at the next council meeting.

     City Manager Lisa Kelly stated that beginning August 3rd, City Hall will be open from 8:30 to 5:00, without closing for lunch, as has been the practice. Beginning in August, and occurring every two weeks, the city will begin customer education programs for the public. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money will be used to target sewer line replacements on Brazell and Carden Streets in the near future. Due to falling limbs that have damaged cars and homes, the city will take down nine old pecan trees on Frederick Avenue. August 1st will be the last day the splash pad at Strozier Park will be open this summer. The city plans to take over operation of the pad from the recreation department prior to next summer. Kelly also stated the city has received two bids for audio-visual upgrades to the City Annex Building. Plans are being made to move the council chambers to the Annex Building in the next few months. The city also plans to have a 20-foot tall Christmas tree in Askew Park this holiday season.

     Chief Jeffrey Sheppard reported that the HPD gives classes each month at the Active Life Center on how to not fall victim to scams. Sadly, an area resident recently fell victim to a scam. Councilwoman Strickland stated that all Hogansville Elementary teachers will visit the homes of HES students on Saturday, August 1st from 11:30 to 5:00, so students and parents can meet the teachers.
