The Meriwether Historical Society program on Gullah-Geechee Culture scheduled for May 31st has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 14th, at 2 pm in the Greenville Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

The program entitled “Haints, Saints and Sinners: The Timelessness of Gullah-Geechee Culture and History,” will be presented by Dr. Joyce White, assistant professor of English at Georgia Southern University and a scholar of Gullah-Geechee literature. Dr. White is currently serving as interim director of the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Center in Savannah.

The Gullah-Geechee are descendants of enslaved people brought to the United States from West Africa. From the start, the Gullah-Geechee have preserved many aspects of their ancestral culture and language. One of the most intact Gullah-Geechee communities exists on Georgia’s Sapelo Island.
