TV series – “The Chosen”

It’s hard to know where to begin this morning for some reason, but here goes. As I’ve mentioned several times before in this column, we don’t watch a lot of TV at our house. During the week, we usually watch the news after dinner and chores are done, and we try to be very selective in the source of that news. On the weekends, we often try to find a wholesome film or documentary. When we find something good, I sometimes recommend it in this column. That is certainly the case today. We have recently discovered an incredible TV series called, “The Chosen.” So far, I think we’ve watched six episodes from season one, and my wife and I both agree it is the most compelling TV we’ve seen in a long time … maybe ever!

The 2018 series is about the life of Christ and how He chose His disciples, and so far, about ministry events recorded in the gospels of the New Testament. Perhaps you’ve seen Bible stories portrayed before, as have we, which were something less than quality productions one way or another. I assure that is not the case with this series. The casting, acting, character development, cinematography and virtually every element that goes into a good cinema production is spot on. No shortcuts on quality with this series.

The director of the series is Dallas Jenkins of whom Wikipedia says: “Dallas Jenkins is an American film and television director, writer and film producer. He is best known as the creator, director and co-writer of The Chosen, the first multi-season series about the life of Christ, and the highest crowd-funded media project of all time.”

In a between-episodes clip, Dallas said that the goal of the project is to expose “The Chosen” series to one billion people around the globe and by the looks of things, they are well on their way.

So far, the episodes we’ve watched deal with

•Calling the disciples and Mary Magdalene

•Bringing in an overwhelming catch of fish from Galilee

•Healing a leper

•Healing the paralytic man lowered through the roof

•Meeting with Nicodemus, and

•Meeting the woman at the well

It’s the way the film knits together the back-stories of how these events occurred that makes the series so believable and relatable. It helps you to really understand the dynamics and conflicts of interest among the Roman government, the religious leaders and Jesus, the upstart, uneducated, wandering Rabbi from Nazareth, and His unlikely band of followers, who were upsetting the entire political and religious landscape.
