Perry Council OKs home day care

The Perry City Council went against a Planning Commission recommendation Tuesday and approved a special exemption application to operate a day care home on Milton Way.

Melissa Wright, who applied for the exemption, said she recently moved to Perry and did not know she had to apply for the exemption. The home is in an R-1 single-family residential district. Wright added she’s had a license to operate a “Bright From The Start” home day care for the past 12 years.

“I’d like to do this the right way and that’s why I’m applying,” Wright said. “I run a home day care. I’m not a baby sitter.”

She said there would be four children at the home even though her license would allow for six children.

The council unanimously passed her exception application.

In other action the council:

• Approved an improved safety and loss prevention manual;

• Approved Atlanta-based TSW’s design concepts for Heritage Park at a cost of $23,270 from SPLOST funds;

• Approved a request from the Perry Ministerial Association for closing Carroll Street from Jernigan to Washington streets and Ball Street from Main to Commerce streets for the Christmas at the Square event from 4-7:30 p.m. Dec. 6;

• Approved closing of Ball Street and Commerce Street for the 3rd annual Christmas on Carroll from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 27; and

• Approved street closings request from the Downtown Merchants Association for the First Friday event of Paintings, Pitchers and Pints from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 4.

Mayor James Faircloth closed the meeting by asking all to “please pray for Paris, and us,” referring to the terrorist attacks of Nov. 13.
