After five years of long planning and thinking ahead, Mayor Randall Walker and council members took the first drink of water from the Tucker Road Water Treatment Plant at the ribbon-cutting on Thursday, October 22.

The upgrading for the opening of the new treatment plant began on Sept. 28. Water advisories were released to the press to notify the citizens of Perry regarding the system upgrade and the precautions the community were to take.

The water treatment plant is a multi-generational water security plant and a state-of-the-art facility that is located on Tucker Road. Two million gallons per day will be distributed, which is capacity.

Citizens will benefit from the new water system due to the rapid growth of the city of Perry, which means the demand of water supply would increase.

The funding for the new water system was financed through the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority. It was priced at over $11 million that was loaned to the city.

“We’re delighted that we’re bringing on what I would characterize as a multi-generational water supply for the city of Perry,” stated Don North, Senior Operations Specialist for ESG Operations, Inc.

ESG Operations is known as one of the nation’s fastest growing operations and public works management companies. Their operations will be running the plant. The city of Perry is contracted with ESG, and their operations also handle Perry’s wastewater, water and natural gas.

The first treatment plant has been around for 75 years and is located between Evergreen Street and Legacy Park. This plant will be decommissioned and replaced with the new treatment plant.

“The quality of this plant will be supplying water for our citizens 75 to 100 years from now,” said North. “When you think about that, that’s an unbelievable scene.”

“Thank you very much for your vision with helping the staff to bring this on and all the engineer and the people working here,” expressed Walker. “We really thank you very much for a true quality project.”
