Being the only contested race during this term’s municipal election in Perry, voters could choose between retired city police major and military veteran, William “Bill” Phelps and seven-year council member, Robert Jones, for the District 2, Post 1 position.

At the end of the evening, after all the precincts had reported, Jones was named the winner of the election with a final tally of 319 votes to Phelps’ 195. Jones grabbed just over 62% of the votes and will be resuming his position with on Perry Council. Phelps final count of 195 represented just under 38% of the votes.

The Journal reached out to Jones to get his reaction to the win, but he was not available for commentary at the release time of this edition of the paper.

One of Jones’ campaign points included looking out for local businesses and maintaining that small-town “charm” throughout the city. He remarked in an earlier statement that he lists his proudest accomplishments on council as “working together with Council Member Bynum-Grace to secure state-of-the-art playground equipment to Creekwood and Rozar Park and establish Pine Needle Park in Perry,” according to the city’s website.

Phelps took a moment to talk to The Journal about his unsuccessful attempt. He mentioned that the voting district was a large one, and he was excited to potentially win in spite of that.

“I’m kind of disappointed, but I feel good in general,” Phelps shared. “I want to congratulate Robert Jones on the win, and I also want to thank those who came out to vote for me.”
