As the numbers of coronavirus cases continue to rise across the nation, so have the number of political figures who have contracted it. One of the latest positive cases to be reported is that of U.S. Representative Austin Scott. Based upon information shared in a statement released Monday by his Chief of Staff, Jason Lawrence, Scott has contracted the disease. A portion of Lawrence’s statement read, “Rep. Scott has tested positive for COVID-19 and is following guidance from the House Attending Physician as well as his personal physician.”

Scott is a graduate of the University of Georgia and was elected to Congress in 2010. He is currently serving his fifth term as U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 8th Congressional District, of which, Houston County is a part. He is reportedly the third Georgia U.S. Representative to test positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic’s inception earlier this year. Last week, U.S. Representative Rick Allen (R-District 12) said that he had tested positive, and prior to him, it was reported that U.S. Representative Drew Ferguson (R-District 03) had done the same.

No further information regarding Scott’s condition was provided. However, Lawrence’s issued statement also extended a note of gratitude, stating, “Austin and Vivien are appreciative of the prayers and well wishes.”

In addition to Houston, other Georgia counties included in the district Austin serves (listed in alphabetical order) are Atkinson, Ben Hill, Berrien, Bleckley, Brooks, Colquitt, Cook, Dodge, Irwin, Jones, Lanier, Monroe, Pulaski, Telfair, Thomas, Tift, Turner, Twiggs, Wilcox, Wilkinson and Worth. Portions of Bibb and Lowndes counties are also included in District 8.

Scott resides in Tifton with his wife, Vivien, and their three children.
