Women Build Month
HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — In the month of October, Houston County Habitat for Humanity kicks off a series of builds this Saturday that will build confidence and connection to the community.
On Oct. 14, Habitat for Humanity will begin the first in a series of “Women Build” days for the month of October. During each day, a team of women makes their way into the community and works on Habitat for humanity projects. The groups plan on finishing up a build and building tool sheds.
Additionally, each participant receives a t-shirt, a water bottle, and blinged-out items and is fitted with the tools they will need. Participants also receive breakfast and lunch on build days.
There was a brief break in the action before work begins; previously, the Women’s Build teams gathered at Gracie’s Rooftop Bar on Sept. 28 for their official kickoff party. The series kicks off later than normal, as explained by Habitat For Humanity Executive Director Bill Goggin, due to logistics with an upcoming property, but progress can still be made on other projects this month.
Several teams and sponsors have signed up for the month’s builds. Teams include SunMark Bank, Fellowship Bible Baptist Church, The Pokeno Club of Warner Robins and Team Booth.
Sponsors include The Fricks Law Firm, Flint Energies, Community Foundation of Central Georgia, Southern Lighting, Georgia Military College, Newton Development, Griggers Wealth management, Roots Turf & Ornamental, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Baxter & Hardin CPAs, Warner Robins Building Supply Co., Griffin Lumber & Hardware and Tony & Mary Zigrino.
For women who don’t have experience in construction, Habitat provides training, giving those who are interested the space to learn a new skill and a chance to build confidence while supporting a noble cause.
“It’s really nice because construction has been traditionally dominated by males and trades. But it’s about empowering women and building confidence in hands-on construction and creating awareness in the community for ladies to contribute, because we have a lot of support from realtors, architects, different ladies in the community that have done well for themselves that have a great cause that they can support,” Goggin said.
Whether you’re a man or a woman, Goggin said people and donations are what keeps the organization going, and Women’s Build is a unique way to show support through the year.
“If you’re gonna build a house, you’re gonna need a lot of cash. And you’re also going to need people to help you build that house. So it fits right in with what we do in the community,” Goggin said.
On the horizon, Habitat will open their application process in November for those who want to build their new home with the organization and will continue their ongoing mission in the community to provide safe affordable housing.
