Westfield holds opponent to seven second half points en route to 42-21 victory on senior night

Tonight was senior night at Marvin Arrington Stadium on the campus of the Westfield School but it was a junior that shone the brightest on this night. Westfield Hornets junior running back Travis McDonald rushed for a game-high 230 yards and three touchdowns during their 42-21 victory over Bethlehem Christian Academy. From the first quarter (two touchdowns) to the second quarter (his third of the game) McDonald made the most of his 24 carries. Westfield managed to get a few more yards on the ground from en route to 417 total while their defense held the Knights to just 34 yards on the ground.

The game began with the Knights missing a 40 yard field goal attempt on their second possession of the game and Westfield took advantage of the misstep with a five-minute drive highlighted by big runs by senior quarterback Garan Daw and McDonald, ending in the later scoring from 14 yards. The Knights tied the game on their first offensive play of the following drive to tie the game at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornet’s would score 14 points during the second quarter en route to a 21-14 halftime lead. McDonald would score the remainder of his touchdowns during the period, first on a 19-yard run and finally with 2:30 minutes remaining on a seven-yard run. At that point he had 120 yards, one of which was a 22-yard run during that same drive.

Both of Bethlehem’s first half scores came on long passing plays from quarterback Jacob Adams, first to Makyal Cooper and next to Lantry Greene. Adams passed for 314 yards and those two touchdowns.

Daw may not have passed for as many yards as Adams (The Hornets, as a team, passed for 2-4 for 32 yards and a touchdown) but he made an equally as powerful impact on the game by running the ball and playing defensive back. Daw rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries while junior Hunter Smallwood rushed for 31 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hornets scored another 14 points during the third quarter, first on a Smallwood run that put them ahead 28-14 with 4:55 remaining in the period and finally with 1:08 left to play on a Daw pass to fellow senior Christian Corbett. Smallwood scored the Hornets final touchdown of the game with 8:02 remaining on a 20 yard run.

Sophomore Michael Fitzpatrick, 5-5 on extra point attempts during the game, also had five tackles at middle linebacker. Fellow linebacker Will Middleton received a second quarter fumble that led to a Westfield scoring drive.

The Hornets, 2-6, will close the season with consecutive road games beginning at Augusta Prep on Fri., Oct. 19 and two weeks later at Pinewood on Fri., Nov. 2.
