Roxy’s Vixens – First annual Fabulous 50’s Sock Hop

Roxy’s Vixens is hosting its first annual Fabulous 50’s Sock Hop event at the Christ Chapel on April 13. The organization is partnering with the Halo Group, a non-profit organization planning to provide work and housing to adults living with autism.

According to member B.B. Von Mars, the vixens started out as a group dedicated to taking 50’s style pin up pictures. Von Mars says the girls quickly realized their retro looks brought joy to people who actually lived in that era. “We found that when we were dressed like this, we attracted a lot of positive attention,” she said. “It took people back to a time in the past.” VonMars says they decided they could use this positivity to bring joy to the community and help raise awareness about pressing issues.

The group’s founder, Roxy says she started the group to expand her photography skills and later realized she could do a lot more than that. “I felt like I always had a knack for making women feel beautiful no matter their shape or size,” she said. The vixens use alternate personas to keep themselves in character and keep their personal lives separate. Roxy says having an alternate persona helped some of the girls come out of their shell and do things they never thought to be possible.

The vixen’s main focus is supporting the community whether it’s a ribbon cutting for a business or a charity event for non-profit organizations. They also pay visits to nursing homes and children’s hospitals to hand out gifts and provide entertainment. “We just try to find a good reason to go out and help our community and show our love for everybody,” Roxy said.

The sock hop event will include live performances, contests and a photobooth. “We’ll have prizes for the best dressed [and] we’ll also have a dance contest,” Roxy said. The event will be family friendly and full of fun. Partygoers can expect to see big stars from the past and even hear some chart topping hits. Von Mars says it’s a great event for a date night or a girls night out. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to provide housing for those in need.

The Halo Group is a non-profit organization that provides vocational, social and residential needs to autistic adults. VonMars says the Halo Group is attempting to raise 3.5 million dollars to renovate the New Perry Hotel into a living facility that doubles as housing for autistic adults. “There’s a lot of people like us in the community that really wanna support them so we’re trying to get them as close to that goal as possible,” Von Mars said.

Tickets for the Sock Hop are $15 and can be purchased at www.ticketor.com/halo.
