Perry Police involved in chase
One suspect was arrested while another escaped during a high-speed chase Saturday, Sept. 2.
Perry Police initiated a traffic stop on I-75 South near exit 134 when an officer tagged a silver Kia going about 90 mph. The suspect pulled over.
“The officer made a traffic stop on a silver Kia with an Alabama tag for going 90 mph,” said Capt. Heath Dykes with the Perry Police Department. “The suspect pulled over and requested why he was being pulled over.”
According to Dykes, the suspect admitted he did not have a license, and that’s when the passenger jumped out of the vehicle while the driver sped off.
The passenger, Malcolm Murray, fled the scene on foot but was quickly captured. Police gave chase on the vehicle.
“We gave chase but then called the chase off,” Dykes said. “The supervisor made the determination that the chase was becoming too dangerous. The speeds were getting too high.”
The driver of the vehicle escaped custody, and police are investigating the incident.
Murray has been arrested and charged with attempting to elude and obstruction of an officer. He has open warrants for his arrest from Indiana, including an open warrant for armed robbery.
The Kia’s license plate number has been traced to a rental car company, and police are attempting to find out who was in possession of the vehicle.
