Northside One-Act play captures fifth in a row

Northside High School won the AAAAA state championship at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) one-act play competition with “The Music Man.” Two students also received individual awards: Alex Oakley and Tyler Staten were named to the All-Star cast.

At the region competition, the production was awarded Best Set Design and Olivia McMillan won Best Actress.

In addition, Olivia Kessel and Tyler Staten were named to the Region All-Star cast.

The students will present an encore performance on Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. at the Ray Horne Theatre for Performing Arts. Admission is $5 or five canned goods at the door to benefit a local food bank.

This is Northside High’s fifth consecutive year of winning the GHSA state one-act play competition. Overall, Northside has finished first or second place at the GHSA state one-act play competition 28 times – 19 times as state champion.

Northside won first place in: 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Brian Barnett serves as Northside High’s one-act director and drama teacher.
