NHS has 18th best one-act play

Northside High School’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” has been named the champion at both the AAAAA region and state level of this year’s Georgia High School Association (GHSA) one-act play competition. The production also garnered awards for Best Set and Best Costumes.

This is Northside’s 18th state champion for one-act play, fourth in a row and seventh in the last eight years.

At the region level, four students received individual awards: Alex Oakley and Olivia McMillan were named to the All-Star cast, Whitney James was named Best Supporting Actress, and Brianna Roberson won Best Actress.

At state this past Saturday at Perry High School, in addition to the championship trophy, Brianna Roberson once again walked away with the Best Actress award.

The cast will present an encore performance on Dec. 8 at the Ray Horne Theatre for Performing Arts. Admission is $5 or five canned goods at the door to benefit a local food bank.

Northside High placed at the GHSA state one-act play competition 34 years in a row from 1974 to 2008. Overall, Northside has finished first or second place 27 times. Northside won first place in: 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Brian Barnett serves as Northside High’s one-act director and drama teacher.
