Originally from Screven County, Smith’s tenure at the Houston County District Attorney’s Office began in 2020. The release said Smith is primarily focusing on handling violation and probation cases, along with high-level narcotics trafficking cases. He has worked 17 years as an Assistant DA and has spent time at two different judicial circuits before coming to Houston County.

“[Smith] is a 2008 graduate of the Mercer University School of Law, and also holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Vanderbilt University,” the release said.  “Since finishing law school, he has remained and worked in Middle Georgia.”

The District Attorney’s Office said Smith had been responsible for between 28-35% of the total cases in each of the last three years. This has made him one of the most recognized prosecutors in the state of Georgia.

Houston County District Attorney Eric Edwards provided comments on Smith’s achievement:

“Mike Smith is the consummate prosecutor and professional. His work ethic, drive, and dedication are the envy and aspiration of all in our profession, and have been for a long time. We are so lucky to have him here representing the interests of the people of Houston County,” he said. “I am thankful to my fellow District Attorneys statewide for recognizing the prolific body of work Mike has put together in the past year and every year that he’s been a prosecutor.”
