PERRY — A statewide agency is looking into a death at the Houston County Detention Center on July 19.
35-year-old Anthony Asbell suffered a medical emergency at the jail at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a media release from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook. Despite attempts to provide medical assistance, Asbell died following the emergency.
In line with standard procedure, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office informed the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. GBI confirmed with the HHJ that they are actively investigating the death.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Asbell’s official cause and manner of death, the post said.
Asbell is the second inmate to die at the detention center this year. In May, a 33-year-old inmate also died after suffering a medical emergency.
Sheriff Matt Moulton expressed his condolences in the post, stating, “The Houston County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to Mr. Asbell’s family during this difficult time and will continue to cooperate fully with the GBI throughout its investigation.”
This is a developing story. We will continue to provide updates as they are made available.
