Langston Road’s Mayfield named Georgia’s Outstanding Principal

On Friday morning, members of the Houston County Board of Education and Langston Road Elementary School students and faculty gathered in the school gym to surprise their Principal. The secret planned event was to honor Principal Dr. Elgin Mayfield for attaining The Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals (GAESP) Georgia’s Outstanding Principal award this year. GAESP Executive Director Hal Beaver was present, and on behalf of GAESP and Mentoring Minds, issued Dr. Mayfield a check for $1000.

When Mayfield walked into the school gym filled with smiling students, faculty and friends, he was greeted by an uproar of applause and cheers. Assistant Principal Kathy Gibbs opened the presentation with words of gratefulness to Dr. Mayfield for his inspiring legacy and lasting affect he has had on the lives of students in his care.

“In this room are the lives that you have touched. In this room are the lives that are changed because of your legacy. In this room is just a portion of your career, and from the bottom of my heart, I wanted to say congratulations, we love you, and we’re going to keep celebrating you for the rest of this day,” Gibbs said.

At the presentation of the award and check, Executive Director Hal Beaver offered his sincere congratulations to Dr. Mayfield for being this year’s choice as Georgia’s Outstanding

Principal.

“Each year our association picks one principal to be the Georgia’s Outstanding Principal; just one out of thirteen hundred and this year Dr. Mayfield is the recipient of that award,” Beaver proudly stated.

Superintendent of Houston County Schools Dr. Mark Scott also offered his sincere congratulations to Mayfield for his recognition and being the recipient of this notable award. He noted that Mayfield has a heart for his profession and the faculty and students he works with as well and it is because of their support that he has attained this success.

“I just want to congratulate Dr. Mayfield on this awesome recognition,” Dr. Scott stated. “He’s the guy that has always had a big heart for what he does. It is because of each and every one of you out there, the children and the teachers.”

“On behalf of the Board of Education and the cabinet, I want to offer our sincere congratulations. You do a great job every day. I know this is a time of year where you are celebrating your successes, so hopefully this adds to your success and to your celebration.”

Mayfield was humbled by the award and wanted each one of the people that took part in his surprise to know that the award wasn’t just about him. He was grateful to be the recipient of the award but noted how this success represented the success of the students themselves.

“This is an awesome award, thank you so very much, I am humbled. Every day, and teachers this is for you too, it’s not about me and to be honest, it’s not about the adults. It is all about you boys and girls. We want to make sure that we get each and every one of you ready for success in life,” stated Mayfield.

Mayfield is immensely proud of what his career has represented and what he had the opportunity to experience with each of his students. Following their path from the beginnings of pre-k has been an experience he won’t soon forget. He credits his award to his experience with the amazing students and teachers he has worked with over the years.

“I wouldn’t trade it for anything; to see everybody at every age and stage in public education has been amazing,” Mayfield said.
