Is it 1773 again?

On December 16, 1773 the Sons of Liberty had had enough of the British Parliament’s “taxation without representation” and decided to destroy an entire shipment of tea sent by the East India Company and dump it into the Boston Harbor. Next Wednesday, it will be December 16 again, and it feels like we’re getting precipitously close to the same kind of tipping point as our Colonial ancestors did in Boston.

Indeed, the last couple of weeks and the next couple of weeks will witness the highest political drama of my lifetime and yours. The closest events we’ve had to it were the Nixon/Watergate scandal, The Clinton impeachment and The 2000 Bush vs. Gore election. But, in my opinion, all of these pale in comparison to where we are today.

We could easily be entering into a constitutional crisis depending on court and legislative decisions at both the state and federal levels during the next couple of weeks. But no matter which way those decisions come down, I believe we’re headed for a period of political unrest such as we haven’t seen since at least this past summer with nightly riots in the streets and perhaps worse.

If Trump prevails in his court challenges, I believe the left will come unhinged again and try to burn down cities and institutions all across America, not just Minneapolis and Portland. That could easily lead us into an era of Marshall law to try to bring some semblance of peace.

If Biden is inaugurated next month, I believe it won’t take much to trigger another 1773 Tea Party event like we saw 247 years ago. There will be 70 to 80 million voters from very red states who will feel very disenfranchised and have embraced our second amendment rights for just such a time as this. Am I advocating this? Absolutely not! But given the right circumstances, I don’t believe it could be avoided.

In either scenario, Trump or Biden, I believe we should be as prepared as possible. So what would that entail? At the very least, be prepared physically for shortages like we saw at the beginning of the COVID pandemic.

But even more, be prepared spiritually. Remember Philippians 4:6-7 tell us to, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

And then there is Psalm 121, which should be a comfort to all of us:

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.”
