Houston County sweeps Perry in weekend basketball action
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — In Saturday’s basketball showdown the Houston County Bears (4-3) built a commanding lead early and never looked back in their 63-43 win over the Perry Panthers (0-1).
The Bears led 20-9 at the end of the first period, and though Perry tried to fight back, HoCo maintained their lead to enter halftime with a 37-21 advantage.
As the third period unfolded, both teams engaged in a thrilling back-and-forth, showing their skills on both ends of the court. As the period concluded, however, the Bears were still on top 55-31.
In the final chapter of the match, HoCo secured their victory with a final score of 63-43.
The Bears are now winners of three straight, just after losing three in a row to start the season 1-3.
Head coach David Bivins commended the team’s resilience in overcoming a rough start to the season, with key football players coming back playing a big role in the recent success.
Perry head coach Mark Gainous lauded his team’s tenacity despite the defeat, and highlighted HoCo senior forward Antwun Zeigler’s performance on the night.
Lady Bears 58, Lady Panthers 50
The Houston County Lady Bears redeemed their loss against Jones County on Friday with a nail-biting win over the Perry Lady Panthers on Saturday.
The first period set the stage with the Lady Bears leading 11-10.
HoCo maintained a slim lead of 23-18 at the end of the second period, and the tension soared as the third quarter unfolded.
The Lady Panthers managed to slim the margin down to two points, and the two teams entered the final period locked in a tie at 38.
With 43 seconds left in the game the teams fought fiercely, but the Lady Bears emerged with the 58-50 win.
“The sky is the limit now…if we keep playing like this we will be just fine.” Lady Bears head coach Daniel Johnson said.
Lady Panthers first year head coach, Fran McPherson, exuded pride in her young squad’s performance.
She acknowledged the youthful vigor of her players, emphasizing their effort despite not quite being in playing shape.
UP NEXT
HoCo will take the week off until they get back in the action on Saturday, Dec. 9 when they travel to face Veterans at 3 p.m.
Perry will travel to take on a tough opponent in Baldwin on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. and will return home to take on Northside on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.
