Coaching carousel in Houston County

This coming 2021-2022 school year will debut multiple new head coaches all over the Houston County area.

Here’s a summary of the new faces you’ll see on the sidelines this coming year.

The most recent hiring in the area was Westfield School’s decision to tab Brock Van Faussier as the new head softball coach of the reigning four-peat state champion program. Faussier is slightly spoiled with the amount of talent already on the roster but will still have the challenge of upholding the winning standard set by former head coach Danny Camp.

David “Buddy” Bivins was announced as the new head coach of Houston County High’s boy’s basketball team earlier this year.

Bivins previously served as assistant boys basketball coach at Warner Robins High. Now he’s at the helm of his alma mater and takes over a team that won just five games and graduated over half of last season’s roster.

Bivins takes the place of former head coach Don Hudson, who left for his alma mater as well. Hudson is back at Northside High School serving as an assistant football coach.

Northside’s former head girl’s basketball coach, Ashleigh Fox, will head back to her hometown of Gwinnett County as the new head girl’s basketball coach of Discovery High School.

Fox’s former position is open and the Northside Lady Eagles have a talented core returning, so it’ll be interesting who’ll be next to lead the promising group.

Scott Lamb announced in January that he’d no longer be the head softball coach at Houston County High after “fulfilling his dream” of serving as coach of Houston County.

He also announced that April Collins would assume the role of head softball coach. Collins was an assistant softball coach for Houston over the past five seasons and will look to lead the reigning region champions to another deep playoff run.

It looks like Shawn Masters will take full command over the Veterans Warhawks’ baseball team after serving as an assistant under former head coach Mark Tallant.

Masters seemed to take the reins as head coach during this past baseball season, but now it’s official.

Masters will also assume the position of head softball coach, a position the Warhawks seem to have had a hard time filling as the program has seen multiple coaches over recent years. Tallant also pulled double duty as the head softball during the 2020 season.

Another coaching change at Veterans will be seen on the hardwood. Former assistant boy’s basketball coach, Randall Owens, will be the new head girl’s basketball coach in place of former coach Nicole Miranda

Perry’s former head girl’s basketball coach, Sherry Richards, went next door to coach at Peach County. In her place will be new head girl’s basketball coach, Natasha Gainous. Gainous previously served as the head girl’s basketball coach at John Milledge Academy.
