Carolyn Futral Hamrick, 89, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 23, 2017, from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. in the Sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Perry followed by the Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in Walnut Cemetery in Unadilla, where Carolyn will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, immediately following the service. Flowers will be gratefully accepted or memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Perry Music Ministry.

Mrs. Hamrick was born in Jefferson County to the late John W. and Mary Elizabeth Sheppard Futral. She grew up in Wadley, Georgia, and graduated from Wadley High School. She earned her undergraduate at Tift College and a Master’s of Music Degree in Organ from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1951, Mrs. Hamrick began her career in Music Ministry in Gainesville, moving to Tifton, and finally Cordele, leading the music at Baptist Churches and infusing herself into the communities in which she lived. It was during this time that she met and married the love of her life, Harry Hamrick. The couple settled in Unadilla, where they would raise their children.

Her entire life, Carolyn always worked hard to create the perfect loving and nurturing environment for her family and friends. It was during the early years of her marriage that she chose to return to college, Mercer University, where she received a Master’s Degree in Education. Mrs. Hamrick taught History, a subject that she was truly passionate about, at Unadilla High School and Dooly County High School, and retired after 28 years of sharing her wisdom with many, many teenagers, often the next generation in families. Mrs. Hamrick expanded her student population to her church, Unadilla Baptist Church, where she taught the Ruth Sunday School Class for over 40 years. Her love of music was also fulfilled every week when she shared her musical talent with the congregation at Unadilla Baptist Church by playing the organ during services.

After her husband passed away, Mrs. Hamrick moved to Perry to be near her daughter and joined First Baptist Church of Perry where she also taught Sunday School for a few years. A strong Christian lady, Mrs. Hamrick enjoyed church and her church family. Some of her greatest treasures were her grandchildren and her great-grandson of whom she was so proud. She lived her life as an example to her family, the “old-school” way, very compassionate, and always doing the right thing. Mrs. Hamrick was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of over 43 years, Harry Hamrick; her brother, John W. Futral, Jr.; her sisters, Alice F. Williams and Doris Watts.

Left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Hamrick are her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dr. Greg Gentry of Perry; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Gail Hamrick of Benson, North Carolina; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; her twin sister, Dr. Cathryn Futral of Forsyth; and her dear friends, Lois Lantz of Forsyth and Elise Phillips of Avondale Estates.

Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
