A parent’s love for a child

Children of a deployed parent have a unique opportunity to

still hear their deployed mom or dad read them a bedtime story thanks to the

Junior League of Macon’s Between the Lines project.

The book, Wherever You

Are, My Love Will Find You By Nancy Tillman, was read by the military

members, who know they will be deployed in the coming year, and recorded for

future listening this Saturday said Phelicia McCallum, the Between the Lines

Chair.

“Having the (recording) is like they are there,” said

McCallum, who explained that the children get the book and the recording on a

CD the day their parent is deployed.

McCallum said the book is about how a parent loves their

child no matter if they are close or far away.

“A parent’s love is right there with them,” she said.

Last year, over 50 people signed up to record the book, and

this year, McCallum said she is hoping for more.

She said it takes about 15 minutes to record the book. With

the number of people, “it is an all day event,” she explained.

McCallum said that while the parents are reading, most like

to point out other things on the pages. Last year, which was the first year of

the project, parents counted the number of animals on the page or pointed out

different things in the book besides just reading it in order to make it more

personal for their child.

The purpose of the project is to provide children the chance

to hear their parents voice when they aren’t there and to promote literacy.
