Celebrating and remembering life
Houston County’s Relay for Life was held Friday Evening on the Georgia National Fairgrounds. This event is rooted deeply in the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer is not only about remembering those who have lost their battle with the disease, but also celebrating with those who have won. This event was a way for everyone there to also show his or her support for many that may at this very moment still be fighting the great battle.
There were many who came out not only to show their support, but also to express their ongoing financial support for those trying to find a cure and for the progress that has been going on for years. The community developed among those who have experienced the effects of cancer is one of the strongest and Relay for Life is where those individuals come together to show up for each other and celebrate their own victories.
Houston County Relay for Life event leader, Carlye Petro, welcomed everyone by calling their attention to not only the fun to be had through the evening’s events, but also for the far more bigger reason they were gathered Friday evening. It was more than just an evening of community; it was an evening that symbolized a battle and a fight that needed to be won.
“Take a minute to take a look around, ” Petro said. “Your neighbors, your friends, your family, we’re all here and we’re all here together. We’re here to finish the fight against cancer, so during the next several hours, we will be together on this journey.” There was a bit of a twist this year as the relays began with a “Parade of Teams,” in which teams of individuals, sponsors, schools and others banded together and walked in show of their support. So many were out showing their support and were proud to represent people, they knew, loved and stood behind who won, lost or were still battling with cancer.
Perhaps the most joyful and victorious moment of the evening was watching as the Survivors were called to the podium to begin their “Survivors Walk” around the track. It was their moment and their victory march, and the smiles on their faces were truly infectious. There were many on the sidelines cheering them on as they marched to represent themselves in their triumph.
“We will celebrate those who have battled, remembered those that we have lost and renew our commitment to fight back. To fight back against this disease and to help end it once and for all,” said Petro.
Relay for Life in Houston County served as an ever-needed reminder to commit to fighting cancer and saving lives. It is a time for celebration and remembrance, which is what took place on the fairgrounds on Friday night.
