Westfield ends five-game losing skid at Crisp
Westfield softball was mired in a five-game losing skid recently. The fifth loss came Tuesday at home against a Pinewood Christian squad that won for the fourth time against the Hornets so far in 2014. Danny Camp, head coach, said it’s been an “inconsistent” season so far. The record went from 7-4 to 7-9.
The eighth win did come on Thursday in a road victory against Crisp Academy. Grayce Bearden batted home four as the Hornets handled the Wildcats 5-2. Callie Ayer pitched a complete game.
Pinewood won Tuesday’s matchup 8-5. The game was tied 4-4, but Camp said with five errors and nine walks Pinewood scored four in a row over the last two.
Ayer was the starting pitcher, giving up just four hits over 4 1/3 innings. She was also the leading hitter with two, including a double and an RBI. Two other Westfield batters reached via a double. Callie Ledford drove in two runs and Chelsea Whaley one.
The Hornets, last weekend, hosted the Gwinnett Barons in a doubleheader. Westfield was in control of the first game 4-1, but gave up four in a row late (four errors on the linescore) to fall 5-4. The Barons dominated Game 2 12-4.
