Soap means science lesson for Perry Middle School kids

Perry Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences classes received a presentation from a parent and local business owner, Michelle Rhoades, owner of Mossy Creek Soap Studio. Mrs. Rhoades made handcrafted soaps with the students using oil, water and lye, a process called saponification. The students explored the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related processes behind the cold and hot process of making soap. Students explored chemical changes that occur to create the soap, proportions, measured accurately and caustic solutions that grant protective gear. Each student received a bar of hand crafted soap from Mrs. Rhoades whose studio is located at 904 Northside Dr. in Perry.
