Westfield’s Amos selected for national tournament

Any immediate summer plans William Amos had took a sharp

turn for the better, a turn that will take him all the way to Oklahoma to show

off his pitching skills against some of the nation’s best rising high school

seniors.

Soon to be a 12th grader himself at Westfield, Amos was

selected as a member of Team Georgia and will play in the Junior Sunbelt

Classic hosted by the McAlester Dugout Club in McAlester, Okla. Games run from

Friday, when Amos and Team Georgia face Team Canada, to June 12.

Amos said the team will get together for the first time this

week in Atlanta and play one scrimmage game. The journey to the Midwest will

include a spend-the-night stop in Memphis. Only then did he say that he will

get to know exactly who his teammates are for these six days.

“I got a call about a week ago saying I was picked,” said

Amos. “I don’t know how. It’s a huge honor and I’m very grateful for it.”

In all, Team Georgia will consist of 20 rising seniors, and

though on Monday Amos wasn’t certain of all the details, an e-mail he received

about it said the group was selected by the

state’s high school coaches.

Amos also knows that his primary role – his only role for

that matter – on Team Georgia will be pitching.

The games will take place in both McAlester and Wilburton,

Okla. Georgia’s schedule includes games against Missouri on Saturday, Colorado

on Sunday, Oklahoma Gold on Monday and Arizona on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the

teams with the two best records play each other for the Sunbelt championship.

Third place meets fourth place and so on down to ninth vs. 10th.

For Amos, this is an unprecedented trip for baseball

competition. He said the only other time he has played outside of Georgia was

in a tournament in Panama City, Fla. For the rest of the summer, Amos plans to

play for the Chain organization.

In a showcase like the Sunbelt Classic, Amos is likely to

play in front of numerous college scouts. He said he hasn’t spoken with any

colleges yet in a recruiting mode, but he does have a desire to play collegiate

ball.

“I’m a huge Georgia fan,” he said.
