As stated by the police report, on December 17, at 3:40 p.m., the Houston County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of aggravated assault in the 100 block of Solomon Road, in Kathleen. The victim of this assault, 25-year-old Tafarod Maybank, suffered a single gunshot to the abdominal area, and was located by the police inside a residence. Maybank went into emergency surgery upon arrival at the Navicent Center of Macon, and remains in the hospital in a stable condition.

Investigators report that an argument took place at a nearby residence between Jaquuan Gatewood and Javonte Gray. Shortly after this argument, Gray, his mother, Cherry Gray, and his sister Decora Evans arrived at 138 Solomon Road to confront Gatewood. The Grays began destroying property and trying to force access into the residence, which led to the physical assault of 70 year old Betty Ivory, the owner of the home. Maybank attempted to assist Ivory, and was then shot once by Evans with a handgun.

After Maybank was shot, the Grays fled the scene in a blue Mitsubishi, and a lookout was sent in search of the suspect vehicle. Corporal Doug Blackmon and Deputy Jonathan Lewis found the vehicle driving on Georgia highway 127 near Perry. After a traffic stop was attempted, the vehicle and its occupants fled and led officers on a chase that eventually ended at hotel on Valley Drive in Perry.

All three suspects were taken into custody without incident, and remain in custody at Houston County Detention Center. Evans was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, Burglary (Party to the Crime). Javonte Gray was charged with Burglary and Battery to a Person over 65 years old, and the same charges were given to Cherry Gray.

Also in the vehicle with the three suspects were two small children. Neither of the children were injured. Juvenile investigators took them into protective care.
