Purvis tosses one-hitter for GSU vs. Furman

It was a very Good Friday as Georgia Southern University softball took a 6-0 win over Furman behind a one-hitter from junior hurler Sarah Purvis (Northside). Two runs in the third and four more in the fourth gave GSU an insurmountable advantage behind Purvis’ solid outing in the circle.

“Every conference win is important in this league and I’m really happy with the way we played,” said head coach Annie Smith. “We got great at bats, played some great defense and Sarah Purvis pitched a great game for us to get the win.”

Purvis pitched a gem, taking a perfect game through four and two-thirds. A walk followed by a single was the only blemish on the junior’s first one-hitter in regular season Southern Conference play. She fanned four Paladins and induced 12 pop ups in the game to improve to 9-11 on the year and 3-0 in Southern Conference play.

With two outs in the third inning, Shelby Morrill’s RBI double sent shortstop Kourtny Thomas (Houston County High) in for the first run of the game. Later in the frame, another run scored as a result of Andrea Tarashuk’s RBI single up the middle to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

An inning later with the bases loaded, Kaitlyn Johnson plated two more runs with a single to right. Later in the inning two more runs crossed off a fielding error by the Furman second baseman on a routine ground ball by Shelby Morrill. The four-run fourth gave GSU the 6-0 advantage through four frames.

On Saturday, Furman swept a doubleheader from the Eagles 5-4 and 3-2. The second game went eight innings.

Brooke Red (Northside) opened game two with three and two-thirds of no-hit ball. Furman, however, tallied an unearned run after a Stephanie Span single was followed by back-to-back passed balls, allowing her to get into scoring position.
She scored with two outs off a Sieara Bishop single for a 1-0 Furman advantage.

Thomas leveled the score at 1-1 when she hit the first pitch of the sixth inning over the fence in left field for her eighth home run of the season.

In the top of the eighth, Furman got a single and two walks to load the bases as Purvis came on in relief of Red with one out in the inning. The Furman designated player leaned into a pitch to score the Paladins’ go-ahead run. After a strikeout, another batter was hit to give the Paladins a 3-1 advantage.

After the first two Eagles were retired in the bottom of the eighth, Morrill laced a double to the gap in left, followed by an RBI single by Tabby Douberley off the wall in right. The runners, however, would be stranded as Furman held on for the 3-2 win.
