Perry High art students earn Gold Keys

Six Perry High School

students won three Gold Keys and six Honorable Mentions for art entered into

the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing competition (SAWC).  The students and

their art teacher, Catherine Heller, will attend an awards banquet on Mar. 23,

2013, at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta.

 

Congratulations to the following students:

·       Two Gold Keys – Steven Le, for his drawings titled “Bike” and

“Skeleton”

·      

Gold Key – Hayley Stepp-Gold for her mixed media titled “Circular

Motion”

·      

Honorable Mention – Steven Le (two awards), Sarah Whiddon, Autumn

Wilson, Courtney Stepp and Lanisha Wilson.

“We are so proud of these talented young people,”

exclaimed Heller. “They have a passion and have worked hard, and they earned

this award.”

 

SAWC is a prestigious recognition program for

creative teens. The Gold Key is the highest level of achievement.  Steven

and Haley’s Gold Key art pieces have been forwarded to the national level for

adjunction.  National winners will be notified at a later date and will

have the opportunity to win scholarships.

 

The contest is sponsored and administered by

SCAD.  Celebrating its 90^thyear, the Awards have recognized the exceptional vision of our nation’s youth

and honored them for their creative talents since 1923.  SAWC is the

largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers in the U.S. Teens

submit their work each year and become a part of the Scholastic community –

young artists, writers, filmmakers, photographers, poets, sculptors and

countless educators who support and encourage the creative process.

 

In the past five years alone, submissions have

topped 700,000 works, and students have been eligible for more than $25 million

in awards and scholarships. Students’ submissions are judged by luminaries in

the visual and literary arts, some of whom have also been past award

recipients.  Many notable past jurors have lent their expertise, such as

Paul Giamatti, Robert Frost, Judy Blume, Lesley Stahl and Edward Sorel.

Panelists look for works that best exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality,

technical skill and the emergence of personal voice or vision.
