Perry firefighters train with planes
The Perry Fire Department spent Thursday morning learning about aircraft and how to handle certain types of emergency situations concerning planes and helicopters.
The training comes just before the air show scheduled for Nov. 2 at the Perry-Houston County Airport.
Deputy Fire Chief David Staton said, “The training is important because we have the airport in our backyard.”
He explained the importance of his firefighters training in the area of aircraft for their own safety as well as to maximize their ability to handle a situation if one were to arise.
Tim Goddard, Owner of Aero Flight Services, helped facilitate the training by providing four of the six aircraft used at Thursday’s training.
The Georgia State Patrol brought its helicopter to the airport and Bill Lavender of Ag Air Update provided his plane for the training. The class consisted of a presentation portion followed by hands on showing of the planes.
Firefighters gained knowledge of fuel line location, aircraft engine functions and the how to approach an aircraft that has been in an accident.
