New projects on tap for Houston County Schools

The Houston County School Board held their monthly meeting Tuesday afternoon to discuss new orders of business.

The School Board changed one position title and redefined one other job description. The position of Coordinator of Classified Certification was changed to Certification Specialist, while the position of Behavior Intervention Teacher was remodified.

An agreement was made between the Houston County School District and SP Design Group Architects and Engineers, Inc in Macon to design a brand new tennis facility on Bear Country Drive. A total of 19 tennis courts, along with a sports lighting system, bathrooms, a concession and support spaces will be installed. An expected $144,000 will be taken from the 2012 E-SPLOST Fund for the project. Construction plans to start in July 2018 and conclude in May 2019.

The Board agreed to have Bryant Engineering work on improving and expanding the parking facility of Eagle Springs Elementary, Kings Chapel Elementary and Westside Elementary School. The proposed site improvements at all three schools will include the construction of supporting infrastructure like the parking facilities, revised bus loop, sidewalks and storm drainage. The upgrades will be $79,150 out of the E-SPLOST Fund.

Perry High School is in the process of getting a new gym called Perry High Gymnasium, which the School Board is planning to invest $10 million in the project. The School Board agreed to invest in the purchase of 750 Lenovo N42 Chromebook computers for students at the price of $176,962.50.

Upgrades are needed in the Data Room regarding the emergency power and cooling. The Board is investing $321,815.08 from the E-SPLOST Fund for the installation of a new generator, battery backup system, service feed and cooling system that will help keep servers operational and provide power for an emergency command station at the Central Office. The purchase was through Dell under the state contract pricing.

The School Board also plans to upgrade three Data Centers: Technology Integration Group, MXN Corporation and Halski Systems, LLC. The Technology Integration Group, MXN Corporation and Halski System, LLC each have a data center infrastructure (storage appliance, servers, switches, backup software) that is at full capacity and the new system will allow for the virtual environment, redundancy and offsite data replication for backup to grow within Houston County.

The upgrades for Technology Integration Group will be $108,385, $28,259 for MXN Corporation and $172,000 for Halski Systems, LLC.

Three new principal recommendations were made at the meeting. The School Board announced that Dr. Greg Peavy will be the new principal at Parkwood Elementary School. Dr. Peavy currently serves as the principal at Northside High School. Dr. Kasandra King, who is currently the assistant principal at Morningside Elementary School will take over as the new principal at Morningside Elementary. Eddie Williams was appointed as the new principal of Tucker Elementary School. Williams currently serves as the assistant principal of instruction at Kings Chapel Elementary School.
