Special to the Journal

The Perry Kiwanis Club recognizes that there are many outstanding young people in the community. Each month during this school year, the Kiwanis Club recognized a scholar athlete from Perry High School and Westfield. The students honored excel not only academically, but athletically as well.

Barrett Stanley is the 2013 student body president and president of his senior class at The Westfield School. He is also a lifelong resident of Perry.

Barrett has been a varsity athlete for four years in four sports: cross country, basketball, baseball and competitive cheerleading. He was third baseman on Westfield’s state championship baseball team in 2011 and state runner-up team in 2012. Barrett was also named All-Region baseball player in 2012 and received All-Region Honorable Mention for basketball in 2013.

In addition to playing sports, Barrett has been the school mascot “Buzz” since the eighth grade. He is an honor student. He attended Georgia Boy’s State last summer in Statesboro and has been selected as a Perry Chamber of Commerce Student of the Month.

Barrett is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and assists part-time as an instructor at Kids America gymnastics studio.

Tyler Claxton is the 2013 Valedictorian of Perry High School and a lifelong resident of Perry. He has been an active member of the Perry FFA since the sixth grade, having competed in numerous Career Development Events on the area, state and national level. In 2011, he was recognized as the top individual in the National Nursery/Landscape contest.

In addition, he was a member of the four-time region champion cross country team that placed fifth in the state this year. This is Perry’s highest finish in the history of the school.
