William Emmett Freeman, a senior at Houston County High

School, was named the system STAR student for Houston County on Thursday

evening.

Freeman who wasn’t able to be present at the ceremony because of another school

function was awarded the STAR award and $1,000 in scholarship money for his

excellence on the SAT.

He named Laura Byrd, his science teacher, as his STAR teacher. This is Byrd’s

seventh time being named STAR teacher.

She said laughingly, “I just end up with really smart

students I guess.”

The Robins Regional and Perry Area Chambers of Commerce

recognized Freeman and Byrd at the county STAR student/teacher banquet.

As the county STAR student and teacher, they will attend the Region STAR banquet

to be held March. The Region winner will attend the state banquet held later in

the year in Atlanta.

Hunter Austin Smith and teacher Jami Moore represented Northside High School. Henry

James Mehserle, III and teacher Nathan Dooley were Perry High Schools STAR

student/teacher. Warner Robins High School had Kathryn Michelle Martin and

teacher Randi Collier representing them. Somnath Das was named STAR student and

David Shepard was STAR teacher for Veterans High School. Hamilton Felton Way

and teacher Pam Pierce represented the Westfield School.

The STAR student and STAR teacher recognition program is sponsored by the Perry

and Robins Regional Chambers of Commerce.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program was created to focus

attention on Georgia’s outstanding students and teachers. To obtain the STAR

nomination, students must have the highest score in one sitting on the SAT

taken through the November test date of their senior year. Students must also

be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class.

Each STAR student selects a teacher whom they feel has been most influential in

their academic success.
