Houston County Retired Educators hold first meeting of new school year
The Houston County Retired Educators Association had its first meeting on Sept. 12 at the Senior Citizen Center in Warner Robins. The HCREA meets the second Thursday of every month September through May every year.
President Faye Burnam called the meeting to order at 11:30. She recognized four newly retired educators that have joined the association.
The “Inspiration of the Day” was read by Marsha Moore. The blessing and prayer was offered by Rick Unruh, Assistant Chaplain. Lunch, catered by Jane Ballard, was enjoyed by all of members and guests.
Fred Wilson, Houston County Board member, was in charge of the installation of officers ceremony. He installed Burnam; Vice President, Mary Catherine Cutrell; and Treasurer, Beth Ann Warnock. Secretary Sandy Smith was absent.
After the installation ceremony, two people spoke about volunteering: Clare Thorn from the Go Fish Education Center at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter about volunteering with the aquariums, gardens, and trail; and Phyllis Dorn from the North Campus of Central Georgia Technical College about volunteering in the Adult Education program.
Brev Hunt, Chairman of the Trust Fund/Scholarship Committee, stated that three Houston County college students were awarded scholarships this year. They are Sarah Kukshtel, Bobbie Padgett and Jenna Spires. Burnam announced that we will have another afghan raffle as a fundraiser for our scholarship fund. Tickets would be sold in the spring of 2014.
Leon Tompkins, Chairman of the Awards/Facilities Committee, drew for the 50-50. Mike Ginn had the winning ticket and announced to place his winnings in the Scholarship Fund. A reminder was made to donate to the Snax Sax, a fund that buys snacks for students at Lindsey Elementary and Perry Primary.
