Special to the Journal
On Jan. 5, Westfield
wrestling placed second in the Patriot Duals tournament hosted by J.L. Mann
High School in Greenville, S.C. Westfield lost the championship to Pickens High
School of South Carolina 42-36.
“Our team performed very
well with several wrestlers going 5-0 on the day (Josh Kinnebrew 106, Chandler
Bohannon 126, Bryce Westmoreland 132, Griffin Cawthon 145) with Cawthon being
voted the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler unanimously by all coaches,”
said coach Michael Thompson. “Team point standings for the tournament held
Westfield in first place with 268 with Pickens close behind with 264. However,
our head to head loss to them gave them the overall win. We were the only
Georgia school in the tournament and competed very well against 3A and 4A
schools.”
Upon entering the tournament in Greenville, Westfield was 9-0 with two
tournament championships so far this season. The season opener was Dec. 8 at
the Battle of the Boro tournament hosted by Bulloch Academy, and the Hornets
won first place with five individual champions: Bohannon 120, Westmoreland 132,
Cawthon 145, Conner Cawthon 152 and Walker Davison 220. Strong second place
finishes were achieved by Josh Jenkins 138 and John Walker Moore 285.
On Dec. 14-15, Westfield hosted the second annual OdoBan Lethal Invitational
with 14 varsity teams competing. Westfield defeated several schools including a
66-12 win over Southland Academy enroute to the first place win. Westfield won
the championship match against Chiles High School out of Tallahassee, Fla.,
46-33.
“With our tournament
growing, our goal is to get 24 teams committed for next season to include
schools from Alabama and South Carolina,” said Thompson. “The middle school
tournament held on the first day of the event is also growing and we look
forward to its expansion next season.”
Westfield competes Thursday at Mount de Sales Academy for the GISA region duals
championship.
