Big, sweet peaches expected this year

The peach trees are blooming in Georgia, and Duke Lane III of Lane’s Southern Orchards in Fort Valley said the heavy blooms are a sign of a good “full crop” this year.

Lane said although the peach orchards are in full bloom, it hasn’t kept his group of growers from checking trees for damage after temperatures dropped rapidly in late winter.

He said the cold blast was short but left “spotty damage,” nothing to be concerned about.

Lane said he is anticipating this year’s crop to be some the biggest, sweetest and juiciest peaches money can buy.

Lane’s produces 35 different varieties of peaches. They hope to have the first variety picked and to the public by late May.

“We’ve got a good crop this year,” Lane said while splitting a few blossoms from a tree to check for budding fruit.
