Zaltana Club to host benefit fund
The Zaltana Club of Perry is hosting a skeet and clay shoot to raise awareness for childhood cancer and funds for their scholarship in honor of Mary Elizabeth Paris. Zaltana President Maggie Schuyler said Paris is the niece of member Laura Pool and granddaughter of a former Perry City Councilman Joe Posey.
“In April of 2014, Laura informed us that Mary had been diagnosed with AML leukemia,” said Schuyler. “Later in the fall, Mary was admitted to St. Judes Hospital. The club wanted to raise funds to help the family, but they had everything already taken care of. Well, Mary is so young she is only 11 years old and has such an amazing spirit and fight in her that we decided in her honor to start a scholarship.”
Schuyler said to apply for the scholarship, the student must be a graduating senior from the Perry area.
“The senior has to be from the Perry area that attends Perry High School, Veterans High and/or Westfield,” said Schuyler. “They themselves or someone in their immediate family had to overcome an obstacle or life changing event.”
Schuyler works in higher education at Middle Georgia State College.
“I have worked both the financial aid aspect and admissions aspect,” said Schuyler. “Every little bit will help someone who is looking to further their education. So any way we can assist students in our Perry community to better themselves and education, that’s what we want to do.”
This is the first time for the Zaltana Club to host this event.
“It is called ‘Shoot for a Cure Skeet and Clay Shoot,’” said Schuyler. “We will be hosting it at the Ocmulgee River Gun Club in Macon on March 14 at 9 a.m.
This is a pre-register event; cost for individuals is $75 and sponsorships and group packages are $200-$1,000. Registration includes continental breakfast, lunch, t-shirt, and a general raffle ticket. Prizes and awards will be given out.” For more information or to register call 478-338-0569 or email zaltanaclub@gmail.com.
