WR Demons have big non-region, playoff-like match-up at Jonesboro Tuesday

The Warner Robins Demons (18-3 overall) are headed to the Georgia High School AAAAA state playoffs, that we know for certain, but there’s still time for a few tuneups before the Region 1-5A tournament and the state tournaments begin.

Demons head coach Jamaal Garman and his team will be playing a non-region game at Jonesboro High School Tuesday night. The Cardinals (12-7 overall, 7-2 in Region 5-3A), playing on a new homecourt, will have a playoff atmosphere similar to what the Demons are to expect once the playoffs begin next month. There’s a good chance the two teams might even meet in the state tournament, with both expected to win or finish as runners-up at their respective region tournaments. “The game at Jonesboro is another big test for us going into the region tournament,” said Garman. “We’ll have an opportunity to work on things in the next few days.”

Both teams rely on experienced rotations, with the Demons having eight seniors in their lineup and the Cardinals having six that play major minutes. The play of Demons juniors Greg Jones, Rashaun Tomlin and senior Ty Carr has elevated the team of late, just in time for a match-up like this.

The game at Jonesboro comes after a particularly busy couple games for the Demons. Warner Robins closed the previous week with home dates against Bainbridge Friday and Veterans Saturday. Both games were crucial to the Demons postseason picture.

Friday the Demons moved to 4-2 in Region 1-5A play following a 69-42 victory over Bainbridge at home and 5-2 after Saturday’s 47-44 victory over Veterans. The win not only moved the Demons a game closer to the Warhawks (5-1) in the standings, but also has them coming to Jonesboro playing their best ball. “It feels good to have won a game against a great team like Veterans but we didn’t finish the game the right way, so we have a lot of work to do,” said Garman.

The game may not count in either team’s respective region standings but it will go a long way in preparing them for a bigger game down the line.
