Wonderful comments from Seahawks

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I am reminded of Pastor Mark Driscoll’s (from Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Washington) interview with three Seattle Seahawks football players and one of their coaches several years ago. The players were Russell Wilson, Russell Okung and Chris Maragos. The coach was Rocky Seto. The pastor asked each for a quick response to the following question: “Who is Jesus?” Following are the comments from the players and the coach.

Offensive tackle Russell Okung said, “Jesus is everything. He will meet you right where you are at. It is free. You do not have to earn it. He gives it to us because He loves us and He is full of grace.”

Free safety Chris Maragos said, “To be humble as to come to earth as a mere man and to live the life that He lived, to go on the cross and to die for my sins and everyone’s sins, that means everything to me.”

Quarterback Russell Wilson said, “Jesus is love. We want somebody to comfort us and to be there for us; that is Jesus. Jesus has always been there. He will never leave you and He will never forsake you.”

Coach Rocky Seto said, “Literally, Jesus is the greatest treasure in the universe. Jesus is better than anything, even better than the Super Bowl and better than an NFL career.”

Area Missionary for Jefferson County Dr. Barry Cosper, who writes a weekly devotion for The Western Star, said that as each man spoke in the taped interview, none of them wanted to stop talking about the Supreme importance of Jesus in their lives. Would this interview have taken place if they did not win the playoffs for the Super Bowl? Maybe, but America might not have heard about it. We are all strategically placed to do something of great importance for God.

Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations that we would never have dreamed of or imagined, only to learn later that it was part of God’s great plan. The situation in which we are placed may be one of great honor, but in the world’s eyes it may also be one that is anything but a great honor. No matter your current situation, when we become malleable to God, He gradually moves us forward and prepares us for His plan, Dr. Cosper continued.

On that Sunday, February 2, 2014 the Seattle Seahawks became the 48th Super Bowl champions. A few weeks prior to that Sunday, Coach Seto said, “Who knows what is going to happen, but if we were to win the Super Bowl, we would tell everyone that Jesus is still better.”

Dr. Cosper asked, “Are you currently in a place in which you never thought that you would find yourself? Who knows whether you have come to the place where you are right now ‘for such a time as this?’” Trust Jesus. He loved you enough to go to the cross for you. He knows your future and He wants to bless you beyond your wildest imaginations.

Esther chapter four and verse fourteen says, “Yet who knows where you are come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” The Hebrew orphan Hadassah (Esther) was taken from her Uncle Mordecai’s home to be groomed and presented to King Xerxes. He chose her to be his queen, and she later saved her people from slaughter.

God probably does not take sides in a football game or any other sporting events but it’s always wonderful to hear comments such as those that were made by Seattle Seahawks players Okung, Maragos and Wilson and Seahawk Coach Seto.
