When An Enemy Attacks

Recently, the Supreme Court made a ruling that limited the practice of Affirmative Action. The headlines that declare that it has been struck down are an overreach, just as wrong as those that scream it is reverse discrimination. The things that limit peoples access to resources have and do exist. So, it was no surprise that as soon as the ruling in the education sector came down that someone would then begin a pursuit of the business sector in regards to addressing historical inequalities. When an enemy attacks, it is not always from the front.

Our courts are filled with what is referred to as frivolous litigation. People and entities that would like to see resources handcuffed by the drudgery of the court system rather than being used to affect positive change are enemies to progress. When this happens, it is more than just a financial concern. The talent and creativity that could be used to improve our lives is spending all their time fighting. Change is something everyone talks about but few seem to embrace.

When less than one percent of the money by venture capitalists is used to support a group that makes up about seven percent of the population, that is a disparity that has measurable factors. It can be seen in educational attainment, treatment in the healthcare sector, and discrepancies in wealth attainment. A better society is one that makes it better for all not for some.

It has been said that a lion’s roar can be heard for hundreds of miles. It serves the purpose of striking fear into any potential adversaries who can hear it. The enemies of change do the same thing. They make a whole lot of noise not just to defeat the foe they see but to discourage the one they cannot. It is similar to the arms race between countries, when they have big parades to show off how big and how many weapons they have. Some would refer to this as a tactic to deter others from waging war against you.

History has shown over and over again that victory does not always go to the one who is the biggest or has the most. The fable of the race between the hare and the turtle shows that. The story of David and Goliath proves that. The inspiration created from taxation without representation grew a great nation: A nation made up of communities that are still striving to fulfill its great promise that all men are created equal and have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

There are those who would rather see a time once again when that was limited to just a few. The real opponent to fulfilling the dream of this nation is not trying to keep people who are doing something from doing, but they are trying to discourage people who aren’t doing something from starting.
