Westfield softball caps win against John Milledge Academy with a two-run homer
The Westfield Lady Hornets added another big win on Tuesday night as they shut out the John Milledge Academy Lady Trojans

PERRY — The Westfield Lady Hornets added another big win on Tuesday night as they shut out the John Milledge Academy Lady Trojans 8-0.
At the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Cate Raines hit a two-run home run to left-center field that iced the game.
The Lady Hornets (5-2) wasted no time getting on the board, batting around the order to start the first inning.
The game had to be paused briefly as the ball rolled under the fence on one of Westfield’s singles, which sent runners back on base.
This did not hinder the Lady Hornets as they continued to put the ball in play.
Westfield spread out eight singles and drove in five runs before their bats were quieted on a fly out to center field.
The Lady Trojans (3-2) made adjustments to their pitching at the bottom of the second inning, which silenced the Lady Hornets’ bats for the next three innings.
John Milledge Academy opened the game strong with three straight singles, however, they could not advance past second base.
This set the tone of the game for the Lady Trojans as they mustered up several hits throughout the game, but could not get any runs across the plate.
The closest John Milledge Academy got within scoring distance was in the fourth inning when they managed to load the bases.
Westfield pitcher Lindy Hair worked her way out of the fourth inning jam, striking out one and forcing the Lady Trojans to ground out to shortstop.
The Lady Hornets pitcher threw six scoreless innings, tallying four strikeouts to go with two walks.
In the fifth inning, the Westfield bats came back alive with a pair of singles to right field that drove in one run to make the score 6-0.
Westfield head coach Ryan Wetherington was encouraged about the way his players played:
“We came out in the first inning, we had a game plan, and we executed it at the plate. We were able to make minor adjustments throughout the game based on their pitching adjustments, which was great for us to see. Offensively, today I was very pleased. Defensively, we were more sound and did not give them anything free. Hopefully this is a good sign for us moving forward.”
