Westfield Lady Hornets are headed back to the state championship game

The Lady Hornets had lost just one game at home this season prior to Wednesday’s GISA AAA semifinal series against Pinewood Academy. That impressive run of home field dominance took a short detour en route to advancing to their third consecutive trip to the GISA AAA state championship game.

“I’m so proud of these girls,” said Lady Hornets head coach Danny Camp. “They have worked extremely hard to get back to this point and they are excited about the opportunity.”

The ease of which Westfield won game one of the series, 3-0 behind an excellent start from junior pitcher Emma Williams, came to an end when Pinewood managed to come back from a 4-0 deficit courtesy of a grand slam by Williams in the first inning, to win 8-7 on a walk-off.

The penultimate game of the day began and ended with the Lady Hornets dominating play. Scoreless after two innings, Westfield managed to find their bats scoring 11 runs during the third inning capped by a pair of two-run home runs from Sadie Hayes and Marena Knowles.

By the fifth inning the Lady Hornets would be ahead 13-3 and cruising to another trip to Mercer University’s Sikes Field for the title game when junior catcher Ellie Williams’ two-run home run officially ended the game.

The AAA state title game will be on Saturday with the first game scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
