Westfield 8th grade baseball defeats TrojansThere is an old theory that if you wait around long enough, good things can happen. Westfield’s eighth-grade baseball Hornets confirmed that on March 9.
Trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the second inning, the Hornets twice rallied for go-ahead runs to stake claim to an 8-5 win over Tattnall Square.
The Hornets trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning before scoring the next four decisive runs in that frame to hold off the Trojans.{more}}
Leyton Pinckney, who sparked Westfield by coming on to pitch in a relief role in the first inning, also sparked the Hornets at the plate. He walked and later scored on consecutive singles by Blake Holcomb and Owen Jones to tie the game at 5-5. Matthew McCrory, pinch-running for Holcomb, then scored on a Connor Doles’ single to plate the go-ahead run and make it 6-5. Mason Lee then lined a sharp grounder to short that ricocheted into the outfield for a single to plate Jones and Doles.
