WARNER ROBINS — The Warner Robins Police Department will be enforcing the red speed cameras near Northside High School from Monday, June 9, to Friday, June 27.

According to a media release, enforcement will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday, and will enforce speeding to those driving at 11 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit.

Warner Robins Police Chief Wayne Fisher said the enforcement’s reason is the same as why they enforce cameras during the school year.

“You still have kids going to and from school and [they] are likely at a greater risk because people are not anticipating the children going to and from school,” he said. “[This enforcement] is to also reduce the risk of injury or accidents. Ensuring the safety of our students and pedestrians in school zones is a top priority.”

Fisher said this area has also experienced speeding issues, providing an additional reason to enforce the speed limit.

Even though the cameras will only be enforced near Northside High School, Fisher said the WRPD will also monitor speed at Huntington Middle School to the best of their ability, given the personnel available.

According to Fisher, the RedSpeed cameras are the only contracted camera system used for photo enforcement.

“The red speed cameras are a critical component of our efforts to create a safer environment around our schools. We urge all drivers to adhere to the speed limits and exercise caution in these areas,” he said.

“When we did the traffic study, [other school zones] did not have a significant speed issue than these identified school zones.”

Regardless of whether school zones are active, Fisher advised those to be cautious and cognizant while traveling through school zones.

“It is summertime, so we do have children that will be out and about in the community, in the streets and roadways,” he said. “Even though there might not be an operational school zone due to summer school, it does not negate the reality that you may have children going to and from, such as football camps and things of that nature that are not associated with summer school.”
