Four athletes signed their letters of intent: One from softball, one from volleyball and two from basketball.

Here’s who signed:

Hillary Haynes — Softball — Benedict College

Haynes, one of three signees heading to South Carolina, committed to a softball scholarship on Monday. According to Demonettes softball coach Rebecca White, she batted over .400 in her career at Warner Robins, and was praised for her lockdown coverage in the outfield for four years.

“I’m very proud of her. It’s an outstanding accomplishment, and she’s been a part of turning the softball program back around,” White said.

Clair Whitson — Volleyball — Reinhardt University

Whitson, the only committee to stay in state, will be taking her volleyball talents to Reinhardt in Waleska, Georgia. Whitson was a four-year starter on varisty, and Demonettes volleyball coach Amy Shepherd shared some of her stats over her career:

429 kills, 242 aces, 31 blocks, 176 digs and 646 assists.

Cam Perkins — Basketball — University of South Carolina Aiken

Perkins announced his verbal commitment as recent as May 9, but finally put pen to paper as he heads off to USC Aiken after being a four-year starter for Demons coach Jamaal Garman.

“Cam Perkins [is] a name that’s been ringing a lot in our community over the last five, six, seven years. I’m happy that he’s able to earn this opportunity to go play college basketball on the next level,” Garman said. “We pride ourselves in making outstanding young men out of our program…he’s one of the guys that held our standard up high, and he raised it a little bit higher with his work ethic.”

Jay Johnson — Basketball — Vorhees University

“Both of [Perkins and Johnson] are near and dear to me. I had to put a little bug in momma’s ear earlier in his years to make sure that he got to the right side of town,” Garman said as the audience chuckled. “Clearly it worked out for him, and he just earned a scholarship to go to Vorhees…But I’m proud of both of these guys because earning a basketball scholarship is very, very, very hard to do.”

On behalf of the Houston Home Journal, congrats to all these athletes!
