Warner Robins handles Jones County in region-shaping win
WARNER ROBINS, Ga — McConnell-Talbert Stadium was electric Friday night as two of 5A’s best faced off. Warner Robins entered the game with three previous losses on the season, but that did not stop them from jumping out to a fast start against the former number one team in Region 2.
From the opening kick, the Demons’ aggressive attack proved to be too much to handle for the Greyhounds. The Demons opened with an ambush kickoff that awarded them the football and set up a touchdown run from Cam Flowers.
The Demons continued their attack by kicking a series of short kickoffs to prevent the talented Jones County Receiver Zion Ragins from returning the football.
Offensively, Warner Robins had their way on nearly every possession through their dynamic rushing and passing attacks.
Senior Cam Flowers and junior Rasean Dinkins managed most of the carries by breaking off many physical runs and punishing any Jones County players who attempted to stop them.
One play that stood out was a physical touchdown run from Dinkins to close out the first half in which he flattened a Greyhound defender on his way into the end zone.
The powerful rushing attack allowed for throwing lanes to open for senior quarterback Judd Anderson. Anderson acted as a field general all game by getting his talented receivers the ball in space.
Even on plays where his immediate progressions were not open, Anderson bought time and fled the pocket to deliver downfield strikes.
Although Anderson delivered many accurate passes, he had some help from his talented receivers Cam Flowers and Isiah Canion. When asked about his receiving core, Anderson was ecstatic.
“Fast, physical.” Anderson said, “They do what they’re supposed to.”
The speed and physicality of the Demons’ receivers poses a definite advantage for the offense in their downfield passing attack.
The Jones County offense struggled to form drives as junior Isaiah Gibson made his presence felt in the Greyhound backfield all game.
Whether facing a double team, being chipped by a tight end on pass plays, or simply going one on one against the Jones County offensive lineman, Gibson consistently found himself in the backfield recording multiple tackles for loss and having a multi-sack evening.
Much of Gibson’s production came in the second half.
“I came out flat.” Gibson said, “But we always talk about finishing every practice, game day, and week.”
His impressive performance helped establish the dominance of the Demon defense that the team has been attempting to replicate all season.
Gibson and the rest of the defense’s intense performance allowed for the team to limit big plays and force turnovers in crucial moments of the game.
This win puts the Demons in the driver’s seat to win their region once again, and this feat helps them on their path to reach the pinnacle once again.
Warner Robins’ Coach Shane Sams was pleased after the victory.
“I’m just proud of our kids,” Sams said. “They came out here and fought.”
The intensity and ferocity of the Demons was not matched by the Greyhounds Friday, and this momentum-shifting win may be the turning point in the Demons’ season.
Coach Sams also recognized the victory’s importance with respect to its implications on the playoffs.
“There’s a lot of momentum and advantages,” Sams said. “A lot of teams are going to have to come play in this stadium.”
The home field advantage given to region champions plays a massive role in a team’s ability to make a title run, and Coach Sams understands that the win Friday is the first step towards reaching their ultimate goal.
