Warner Robins falls in clash with Valdosta

VALDOSTA, Ga. — The Warner Robins Demons took a trip to Titletown on Friday, and it was not a pleasant one.

The Valdosta Wildcats had their way with the Demons for their 950th all-time win in a 45-12 final, a complete antithesis of last week’s performance against Northside.

The biggest problem at times for the Demons against Northside was finishing. Against the ‘Cats they couldn’t even get started.

On their first drive of the game the Demons failed to gain any positive yardage, and after a punt, junior quarterback Todd Robinson took it 49 yards to the house on the first play of the drive to put the ‘Cats up 7-0.

After coming up empty they did manage to get a stop, but again couldn’t do anything positive with the ball.

The ‘Cats’ front seven dominated the line of scrimmage all night. Even when the Demons tried to get a pass off, Judd Anderson didn’t have enough time for the plays to develop before he had to scramble.

The defensive intensity wasn’t a surprise to anyone, especially head coach Shane Sams, who knew what they had to face going in to the game.

“It’s definitely one of the best defenses we’ve faced,” Sams said. “We knew it coming in, we had a plan for them. They made some changes and we didn’t stay a step ahead. We allowed them to make changes faster than we could and again, that’s my fault.”

The Demons did manage to hold off the onslaught for most of the first half, and only trailed 17-3 at the break.

A comeback was still in the realm of possibility with as many weapons as the Demons have, it was just a matter of getting the ball to them. All they had to do was give Anderson a second or two more in the pocket.

Right out of the half, the defense forced a fumble to give the Warner Robins offense a chance on the ‘Cats’ 40-yard line, but after getting stuffed on the ground they were forced to give the ball back.

After that the ‘Cats scored on each of their next four possessions, including an 85-yard run down the left sideline and a pick six on Anderson to put the Demons down 45-9 with 7:14 left in the fourth.

Warner Robins did manage to get a field goal to go with 3:21 left to go, but by then it was long over.

After the game Sams was clearly displeased with the outcome and everything that led to it, especially after such a special win last week.

“It’s my fault. I never got them off of the high [of the] victory,” Sams said. “It’s 100% my fault, I didn’t get them ready for the game. That’s going to be a big change. I’m going to make sure that never happens again.”

The Demons will look to bounce back in their trip to Hampton, Georgia to take on their first region opponent in the Dutchtown Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
